Horror MoviesTrivia Questions & Answers

There's a special thrill in turning off the lights, settling in, and letting a horror movie work its magic on your nerves. For more than a century, filmmakers have known exactly how to make us grip the armrest, hold our breath, and jump at a creaking door. Horror is one of cinema's oldest genres, stretching back to the silent era, and it has never lost its grip on audiences. From haunted houses and mysterious monsters to eerie scores that warn us something is near, these films tap into our deepest instincts. What is it about being safely scared that we find so irresistible?

Many horror classics began with brilliant inventiveness rather than big budgets. Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film Psycho startled audiences with its shocking shower scene and Bernard Herrmann's shrieking violin strings. Steven Spielberg's Jaws (1975) is often called the first summer blockbuster, and its famous two-note theme by John Williams made audiences fear the water, even though the mechanical shark frequently broke down during filming. Earlier, Universal Studios built an empire on monsters like Dracula and Frankenstein's creature in the 1930s, with actors Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff becoming icons. These films proved that suggestion and atmosphere can frighten us far more than anything shown directly on screen.

Horror has also launched the careers of celebrated directors and reflected the anxieties of its era. John Carpenter's Halloween (1978), made on a modest budget, helped popularize the slasher film and introduced the masked figure Michael Myers. Director Wes Craven later played with the genre's own rules in his clever Scream series. Across the Pacific, Japanese filmmakers created an influential wave of atmospheric ghost stories that Hollywood eagerly remade. More recently, Jordan Peele earned an Academy Award for writing Get Out (2017), showing that scares and sharp social commentary can go hand in hand. Through every decade, horror keeps reinventing itself while delivering the timeless delight of a good scare.
